How Our NZ Pet Pharmacy Service Works
Fulfilling your prescription with My Vet is simple. Follow the step-by-step pathways below based on whether you are placing a new order or refilling an existing script on file:
First-Time Prescription Orders
- Obtain a Written Prescription: Ask your local veterinarian for a written prescription following your pet's consultation. Under the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ) Code of Professional Conduct, veterinarians are ethically obliged to honour requests for written authorisations in lieu of in-clinic dispensing.
- Select Your Medication & Checkout: Search our range for the exact medication, strength, and quantity specified on your vet's written prescription, then complete your order online.
- Send Your Prescription: You can upload a clear image during checkout, email a digital copy to info@myvet.co.nz, or have your vet clinic email the original script directly to us.

Post the Hard-Copy Original (Required within 7 days): Unless sent directly to us by your vet clinic, NZ regulations require that the physical hard-copy prescription be posted to our pharmacy within 7 days of being written:

Repeat Orders (Prescriptions Held on File)
- Select "Prescription on File": Choose the script on file option and confirm your pet's name. If valid repeats remain on file from an original prescription received within the required timeframe, your order will be processed and shipped immediately. If your repeats have expired or run out, you will need to obtain a new prescription from your vet.
VCNZ Guidelines: Requesting a Written Prescription from Your Vet
If you are unsure about asking your local clinic for a written authorisation to buy pet medicine online, the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ) Code of Professional Conduct provides clear guidance:
"Where there has been a consultation and a veterinarian has proposed treatment with a veterinary medicine, the client is entitled to request from the veterinarian a written authorisation to take away and have the product dispensed by a different trader rather than have the consulting veterinarian dispense it. The consulting veterinarian is ethically obliged to comply with that request... except in exceptional circumstances this would be within 24 hours."
Vets may charge a reasonable administrative fee for writing the authorisation, but they are expected to provide it promptly whenever a standard consultation has taken place.
