More information

Methimazole Spot-On (MSO) for cats is a convenient transdermal gel formulation applied to the ear once daily for the treatment and control of feline hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which an excess of thyroid hormone is produced by the thyroid gland. The active ingredient, methimazole, works effectively by reducing the amount of thyroid T4 hormone produced. While it does not cure the underlying condition, it successfully manages and controls it when administered for the rest of the cat's life.

Please note, this is a restricted veterinary medicine in New Zealand (ACVM Registration No. A010271). You will require a valid prescription from your vet to purchase this product. One 1ml applicator will typically last 10 days at a standard maintenance dose of 0.1ml per day.

Common use

Methimazole Spot-On for cats is commonly used for:

  • Treating and controlling chronic feline hyperthyroidism by reducing excess thyroid T4 hormone production
  • Cats that are difficult to dose with traditional oral tablets or liquids, providing a stress-free alternative via transdermal absorption

Ā

Dosage & administration

  • Apply the gel daily strictly under your veterinarian’s instructions using the finger gloves provided. Always wear gloves during application to avoid accidental human absorption.
  • Alternate ears each day. If there is any visible crusting due to the accumulation of the medication, please gently wash it off before applying your next dose.
  • Dosing is highly dependent on the individual animal, initial blood test results, and the severity of clinical signs. This dose will be adjusted by your vet according to ongoing test results and routine check-ups, which are incredibly important when managing this disease.

If you are unsure about if this product is right for you or if unsure about your cat's dosage, we recommend asking your local vet.

FAQs

Q: Do I need to visit my veterinarian about my pet?

A: Yes! We cannot prescribe medication for your pet as a veterinarian needs to personally examine your pet. Buying pet prescription medication online is a great way to save money and add a little convenience to your busy life. However, it is not meant to be a replacement for visiting your local veterinarian in person.

Q: How long does one applicator last?

A: One 1ml applicator will last approximately 10 days at a standard daily dose of 0.1ml per day. Your vet will outline the exact dosage volume required based on your cat's thyroid blood tests.

Methimazole Spot-on (MSO) - 3 x 1ml | Prescription Required

This product keeps my cat Sampson, in good check of hsi thyroid problems. It is great and so easy to apply, much better than tablets, although it does cost more it is worth every cent for the ease it is to give.

Methimazole Spot-on (MSO) - 3 x 1ml | Prescription Required

My cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism about 10 months ago. She has been on MSO daily since then and this is working really well. Now just needs 3 monthly checks re bloods, heart & general health. MyVet price is great for this prescription medication. Always arrives quickly and has free delivery because of the cost of MSO. Super-easy to apply too.

Methimazole Spot-on (MSO) - 3 x 1ml | Prescription Required

MyVet make this essential medicine affordable. My cat couldn’t tolerate tablets so having an ear gel was literally a life saver. Delivery was slower than usual on the last order which may be the couriers themselves.

Methimazole Spot-on (MSO) - 3 x 1ml | Prescription Required

I don't mind sharing my experiences but I do not wish to have my name publicly used. My senior cat has responded well to MSO. She doesn't mind having it on the inside of her ear and to my understanding it does not adversely affect her body overall. It is an up and down journey as the dosage has been adjusted. See the vet usually 3monthly for blood test.
